Description

A hungry Gug in the Cemetery of the Gugs!

Drawn for the Monthly Topic at MindfulTriphammer [link] Even tho I kind of got away from the topic, the basic idea is still there :)

"Then two pink eyes shone, and the head of the awakened gug sentry, large as a barrel, wabbled into view. The eyes jutted two inches from each side, shaded by bony protuberances overgrown with coarse hairs. But the head was chiefly terrible because of the mouth. That mouth had great yellow fangs and ran from the top to the bottom of the head, opening vertically instead of horizontally." H. P. Lovecraft, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath

I had a ton of fun painting this, but still learning as I go. Comments and Critiques welcome!

Hey Jared! This is an amazing painting! You really are VERY good at epic scenes like this. I'm honestly not familiar with most of Lovecraft's work other than Cthulu, so my critique is from the perspective of not knowing this beast.
I really love the soft foggy lighting you have going on here which I think give it a fairytale sort of quality. It's a beautiful image that happens to have a hideous monster in it. I think it would be especially enchanting to a younger audience because the monster is more eye-candy than it is the stuff of nightmares. You also created a lot of depth and added to the epicness by showing the tower in the background as a faded silhouette and with the sharper detail in the foreground imagery, and the little archer to show scale.
It's hard to find fault with it and the only things that I can say that may be helpful might be just my own opinion. But I think there needs to be more of a transition with the hair growing around the mouth. He's got lips and then suddenly long hair growing straight from them. Also there might need to be a longer shadow being cast from the monster to the right of him but that wasn't immediately noticeable to me. The mouth is a focal point, so a touch more realism to that area might be an improvement. One more thing, and I hate to say this cause it sounds nitpicky, but does this creature have 3 arms or 4? But anyways, like I said you're amazing at painting monsters! I'm giving you a high score indeed!
